Vice President, Medical Affairs

Our client is a clinical stage, fast-paced and high-energy biotechnology company. They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Vice President, Medical Affairs.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Builds, develops, and leads a Medical Affairs department, including MSLs and MSL leadership, Medical Communications/Publications/Education, Medical Information, and other relevant functions.
  • Ensures that Medical Affairs employees are properly managed, qualified, and trained to perform their jobs effectively.  Coaches, manages, and mentors direct reports while providing job enrichment and developmental opportunities.
  • Assures timely goal and individual development plan setting.
  • Leads and conducts the performance management and merit process throughout the year for the Medical Affairs team.
  • Member of the Clinical Leadership Team and plays a key role in establishing policies, R&D efforts, and collaborations with other functions.
  • Actively participates in the strategic direction of business and provides guidance on opportunities/hurdles that may be forecasted.
  • The incumbent will have a strong outward facing presence in the global and regional KOL community.
  • Supports business development, potential product evaluation, and due diligence.
  • Provides medical/clinical expertise to internal and external customers.
  • Supports commercial team with therapy area and drug related training, educational updates, and serves as ad hoc representative support where specific medical/scientific input is needed.
  • Supports clinical development by providing commercial and post-marketing insights to ensure effective clinical trial design and data generation.
  • Participates in strategy development for filings outside the US and the commercial/medical affairs approach associated with those regions.
  • Develops and manages budgets required to implement Medical Affairs plans, and regularly reports progress to stakeholders.
  • Fosters and facilitates Investigator Sponsored Trial submissions/review and execution/reporting of approved projects.
  • Develops and manages clinical advisors. 
  • Assists in the selection of outside experts and maintains key relationships of mutual interest around clinical trials, guidelines, and advisory boards.
  • Conducts field visits as appropriate.
  • Develops and delivers scientific and medical presentations, organizes and leads medical advisory boards, participates in investigator meetings, and identifies relevant medical meetings and congresses and determine appropriate participation
  • Represents Medical Affairs on Legal, Medical, Regulatory Review Committees.
  • Reviews and approves of advertising, promotional, scientific, and educational materials.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Requires an advanced degree (MD or equivalent).
  • Sub-specialization training or industry experience in hematology, nephrology, ophthalmology, or rare/orphan diseases highly preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of management experience in medical affairs, clinical development, or equivalent within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience in a small or entrepreneurial setting, and experience launching specialty products in the US market highly preferred.
  • Requires knowledge of PhRMA, OIG, and other guidelines to ensure compliant medical affairs activities.
  • Must be a team player with strong negotiation, problem-solving, and strategic influencing skills.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including ability to effectively articulate highly technical/complex scientific data and concepts to audiences with differing scientific and technical knowledge required.
  • The ability to travel as required with no restrictions.
