Vice President/Head Oncology Clinical Development

Our client is a global, research-based biopharmaceutical company. They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Vice President, Oncology Clinical Development

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Provides direction and vision to Solid Tumor portfolio strategy and leads multidisciplinary medical/scientific groups.
  • Sets and executes aggressive and innovative Solid Tumor strategies with consideration and evaluation of both internal pipeline and external licensing opportunities, while ensuring development programs effectively advance through the registration process to successful commercialization.
  • Works in close collaboration with colleagues in Discovery, Medical Affairs, Commercial, and Regulatory functions.
  • Ensures effective project leadership and strong clinical science within the therapeutic area by hiring and mentoring top talent for Group MD positions. Direct oversight of Group Medical Directors responsible for late stage Solid Tumor pipeline development.
  • Responsible for external collaborations and partnerships where applicable.
  • Increases productivity of R&D by implementing and maintaining state of the art IT capabilities and by outsourcing essential but lower risk activities.
  • Demonstrates and models appropriate flexibility and adaptability to deal with a varying portfolio mix and funding fluctuations, including a strategic use of all sites, CROs/external collaborations and increased employee cross-training.
  • Ensures continuous improvement of the entire function with respect to technologies and processes.
  • Effectively networks with internal and external opinion leaders. Acts as ambassador to the external scientific, medical, investor, and media communities.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable corporate and divisional policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the program budget. Oversees strategic resource planning/allocation for programs together with Project Leaders, Project Management, Finance, and relevant functions. 
  • Provides the appropriate scientific expertise and direction to drive Division business strategy and decision making processes including external ventures, new product development, business development opportunities, and commercial/marketing strategic initiatives.
  • Assure high level of competence and continuous improvement of the function.
  • Ensures that personal and employee skills are continuously updated and modified to address business development and opportunities.
  • Role requires ongoing analysis of scientific, medical, commercial, payor, and regulatory trends in order to guide strategic and tactical efforts within a high risk/reward environment with long development cycles. This position will typically have wide latitude in decisions that involve strategy and tactics.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in Science (MD) is required;  An MD/PhD with oncology/hematology clinical training is preferred.
  • Must have recognized expertise in Oncology, hematology and demonstrated experience in the global development of innovative therapeutics. 
  • Requires a sound understanding of the overall drug development process with particular focus on interaction between the various disciplines (scientific and commercial), international regulatory environment and global development process.
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in new product development is required.
  • Must have strong cultural leadership, communication, networking, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Requires the ability to build and lead a global organization of significant size including interdisciplinary scientific teams.
  • Must have the ability to clearly articulate a compelling therapeutic area vision to a wide range of constituencies.
