Vice President Medical Affairs

Our client is a leading biopharmaceutical company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Vice President of Medical Affairs

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for building and directing the Medical Affairs team, including MSLs and MSL Leadership, Medical Communication/Publications/Education, Medical Information, and other relevant functions.
  • Builds medical affairs strategy for company’s first product launch and pipeline assets as they ready for launch.
  • Actively participates with the corporate leadership team on strategic direction of business and provides guidance on opportunities and hurdles that may be forecasted.
  • Supports business development, potential product evaluations and due diligence.
  • Supports the Sales team with therapy area and drug related training, educational updates, and ad hoc representative support where specific medical and scientific input is needed.
  • Develops and manages budgets required to implement Medical Affairs plans, and regularly reports plan progress to stakeholders.
  • Provides medical and clinical expertise to internal (marketing, sales, manufacturing, managed care, regulatory affairs, R&D, and legal) and external (healthcare professionals, patients, advocacy groups, etc.) customers.
  • Fosters and facilitates investigator sponsored trial submissions/review and execution/reporting of approved projects.
  • Develops and manages clinical advisors. 
  • Assists in the selection of outside experts and maintains key relationships of mutual interests around clinical trials, guidelines and advisory boards.
  • Develops and delivers scientific and medical presentations, organizes and leads medical advisory boards, participates in investigator meetings, and provides medical support to commercial advisory boards.  
  • Identifies relevant medical meetings and congresses and determines appropriate participation (Med Affairs station, abstracts, posters, etc.).
  • Represents Medical Affairs on Legal, Medical, Regulatory Review Committees.
  • Reviews and approves advertising and promotional, as well as scientific and educational materials.
  • Works with Corporate Affairs group to foster patient advocacy group relationships.
  • Leads and conducts the performance management and merit process throughout the year for the Medical Affairs team; responsible for assuring Medical Affairs employees are properly managed, qualified and trained to perform their jobs effectively.
  • Coaches, manages and mentors direct reports while providing job enrichment and developmental opportunities; assures timely goal and individual development plan setting.
  • Conducts field visits as appropriate.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Must have MD, DO or foreign equivalent.
  • Sub-specialization training in oncology/hematology is preferred.
  • Malignant hematology, oncology and/or immunotherapy experience is required.
  • Must have at least 5 years of management experience in medical affairs, clinical development or equivalent.
  • Experience launching oncology products in the US market required; experience with oral products is preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of PhRMA, OIG and other guidelines to ensure compliant medical affairs activities.
  • Must be a team player with strong negotiation, problem-solving and strategic influencing skills. 
  • Requires the ability to effectively articulate highly technical and complex scientific data and concepts to audiences with differing scientific and technical knowledge.
  • Must have ability to perform successfully under stringent timelines and with changing and competing priorities.
  • Must have experience with information technology systems assessment, implementation and function.
