Director, Search and Evaluation, CNS

Our client is a privately held pharmaceutical company founded by physicians. They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Director, Search and Evaluation, CNS

This person will be responsible for the identification, evaluation and pursuit of assets for potential in-licensing and strategic transactions in support of the company’s Business Development Strategy.  This position will have a critical impact on the successful pursuit of the company’s BD strategy to build the company’s development pipeline and commercial product line. The focus on new opportunities in pain and additional therapeutic areas is outlined in the company’s Business Strategy.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Identifies and evaluates in-licensing and strategic transaction opportunities.
  • Provides recommendations based on scientific/technical merit, commercial potential and strategic alignment with the company’s business development strategy.
  • Requires proactive behavior in identifying opportunities; a broad and current knowledge of the technical and commercial aspects of the field; and ongoing engagement with prospective partners. 
  • Rapidly reviews and analyzes technical and commercial information and reports; facility with resources.
  • Effectively leads and collaborates with cross functional teams in the evaluation and pursuit of opportunities, including internal experts from BD Transactions, R & D, Regulatory, Commercial, Corporate Finance, Market Access and Legal as well as external stakeholders, including KOLs.
  • Coordinates and participates in the development of opportunity presentations to governance committees and support Senior Management and Board presentations as required.
  • Attends major Pain/CNS scientific/partnering meetings to identify opportunities, to build professional networks (with biopharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and investor groups) and develops/maintains an up-to-date awareness of the latest scientific advances, the industry-wide Pain/CNS development pipeline and commercial landscape.  May attend other TA – related conferences as needed to support BD strategic objectives.
  • Serves as a contributing member of due diligence project teams.
  • Prepares opportunity specific presentations/reports as required.
  • Enters project specific information and review outcome in the BD project database.
  • Prioritizes licensing opportunities based on technical/clinical and business/strategic merit.
  • Proactively draws on available scientific, medical, and business resources to support the above activities to validate and progress evaluations.
  • Facilitates internal evaluation processes across functions.
  • Meets extensively with external parties including potential corporate partners, academic partners, key researchers and opinion leaders.
  • Evaluates new opportunities and determines the significance of pre-clinical and clinical data.
  • Utilizes various databases, internet, and company resources to make, and drive, decisions.
  • Thinks creatively to identify critical issues and risk/benefit profile of an opportunity issues.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • MD or PhD preferred. Highly experienced candidates with an MS degree will be considered.
  • Evidence of deep scientific expertise and strong business acumen.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in support of, or completing transactions.
  • Minimum of 7 years in the biopharmaceutical industry with business development experience.
  • Previous experience in pain and CNS is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively.
  • Must be an effective team leader.
  • Excellent communications skills and experience with presentations to senior management.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work productively with minimal supervision.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks/projects.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to think strategically at business and corporate levels.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary or consistent with corporate needs.
