Senior Director/VP Business Development

Our client combines science with compassionate care to provide medical products of value to patients and the healthcare system. They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Senior Director/VP Business Development.

This person will be a key member of the company’s Licensing and Business Development team and will play an important role in executing business strategy and fueling growth from external sources via M&A, in licensing, alliances, and other collaborative arrangements. This position will lead a team of professionals and be responsible for negotiating deals.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Negotiates and closes global deals that diversify the company’s business and drive growth consistent with overall business strategy.
  • Supports and contributes towards the achievement of overall Business Development objectives, strategies and tactics for growth of the company’s business.
  • Provides business input to assist in evaluating targets and licensing opportunities in line with company’s strategy.
  • Develops, proposes and leads negotiation strategies in line with company’s business objectives. Ensures that the company is well represented in deal situations.
  • Establishes collaborative relationships and maintains close communication with the senior management team and other key internal stakeholders including R&D, legal, regulatory, finance and commercial regarding current projects.
  • Hires, trains, and motivates other team member in the transactions group.
  • Assures appropriate deal structure, terms, financial models and value creation within the framework of applicable strategies and objectives.
  • Fosters internal communication and responsiveness. Applies the appropriate processes and procedures to understand and meet partners’ needs and expectations.
  • Plans, develops, and successfully structures and negotiates new business proposals.
  • Prepares and delivers internal project presentations / proposals.
  • Leads cross-functional project teams.
  • Proposes measures to improve internal processes to assure optimal evaluation of potential targets and opportunities.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 15 years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience with a minimum of 7-10 years of Business Development experience in a leadership role.
  • BS/BA degree from a four year accredited university or college required.
  • MBA, JD or equivalent experience.  CFA or CPA also considered.  P&L experience also a plus.
  • Demonstrated track record of a wide range of executed transactions: Experience in negotiating and closing a variety of business agreements including M&A transactions, joint ventures, licensing agreements, co-promotions, strategic alliances and other types of corporate collaborations.
  • Strong business and financial acumen with the ability to evaluate deal alternatives; Scientific or clinical experience and advanced science degree a plus.
  • High skill level with Excel.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams to build strong working relationships with colleagues and to ensure efficient and effective achievement of key deliverables.
  • Robust understanding of the full drug development and global regulatory processes, lifecycle management and commercialization of therapeutics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey key recommendations to senior management and the Board of Directors.  Also ensures clarity of focus and message during internal and external discussions.
  • Knowledge of market and competitive environment including deal activity and potential opportunities.
  • Can effectively manage business processes and opportunity evaluation.
