Head of Immuno-Oncology

Our client is a rapidly growing therapeutics company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Head of Immuno-Oncology.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Leads the company’s strategic and operational drug discovery and developmental efforts for the Immuno-Oncology therapeutic area.  This position will drive Immuno-Oncology efforts from inception.
  • Together with corporate senior management, completes a deep dive assessment of the opportunity to define an Immuno-Oncology R&D playbook.  This playbook will define business objectives, partnering strategies, product segmentation, early clinical targets and discovery / development strategy.
  • Cultivates and solidifies relationships with leading Immuno-Oncology pharma/biotech to develop enabling partnership(s) that complement the company’s capabilities and objectives.
  • Identifies and nurtures relationships with leading academic centers with the capabilities and patient samples to better understand its potential for cancer patients.
  • Serves as the Immuno-Oncology internal subject matter expert.
  • Establishes and builds a cross-functional Immuno-Oncology research team focused on mouse modelling, pharmacology, immunology, sample analysis, and other relevant functions defined by leadership.
  • Expands the external scientific visibility and reputation of the company in immuno-oncology by driving publications, presenting at key scientific meetings, and representing the company with KOLs.
  • Ensures optimal operational performance and synergies across various research areas. 
  • Participates in R&D leadership activities to enhance company culture and rapid growth.  Fosters an innovative environment with the purpose of advancing the company’s research interests and furthering the field of Ecobiotic drugs.
  • Effectively collaborates with colleagues in Bioinformatics, Molecular Technologies, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Clinical groups.
  • This role reports to the VP of Translational Science. 
  • Identification of project risks and contingency planning.
  • Drives programs through IND and Clinical PoC.
  • Ensures highest caliber of internal staff through hiring, mentorship and appropriate oversight, and an effective network of outside partners, collaborators, and service organizations.
  • Together with R&D leadership, leads the effort in generating and obtaining consensus on the criteria for the nomination of a drug candidate to preclinical development and clinical development.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Deep expertise in immuno-oncology.
  • PhD or MD/PhD is required for this position with at least 10 years of experience in drug discovery and development.
  • Significant track record of leading R&D partnerships with academia and other pharma/biotech companies.
  • Strong understanding of tumor immunology.
  • Experience building teams from inception.
  • Expertise in biologics is strongly preferred.
  • Successful track record presenting to corporate officers and board members.
  • Strong influencing skills.
  • Critical thinking capabilities.
  • Track record of defining and delivering on an innovative R&D strategy that has yielded several INDs, NDAs, BLAs.
  • Superior management skills and business acumen.
  • Past leadership in the transition of discovery programs into clinical development.
  • Detailed knowledge of the drug development process and FDA regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Patient-centric mindset.
  • Desire to take a hands-on approach to advancing the portfolio.
  • Large and small company work experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
