Senior Director, Compliance Operations

Our client is a major global healthcare company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Senior Director, Compliance Operations.

The Senior Director, Compliance Operations reports to the VP Compliance, North America and is accountable to support the VP in developing and successfully executing the North America (NA) Compliance function's strategies.  This is a senior role within the NA Compliance function that leads 4 Compliance & Ethics Leaders (CEL) and 1 Director -- Compliance Policy, Training & Communications.  The incumbent is expected to lead and/or manage various strategic Compliance projects.

The incumbent is accountable for supporting and partnering with the Cardiovascular (CV) Business Unit to achieve the BU's strategic objectives with integrity and high ethical standards.  This position will also promote compliance of the business unit with Global and US Policies, relevant laws and regulations.

This person is expected to play a key role in leading the ongoing improvement of a robust Compliance program across the US business, including delivering effective training, proactively partnering with the business and Compliance peers and colleagues to identify and manage compliance risks and opportunities.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Provides leadership guidance to the development and execution of an effective training and communications strategy.
  • Ensures a simplified and robust Compliance Policy and relevant guidance, which is easily accessible and understandable.
  • Manages the CELs and responsible for objective prioritization of resources in support of other Compliance areas for the achievement of the function's objectives and strategic priorities.
  • Initiates/leads/manages various strategic compliance projects with the support of the team and other peers.
  • Supports the ongoing development of NA compliance team (e.g. through project participation opportunities, role swaps, etc.).
  • Supports managing the department's budget to target.
  • Provides policy and compliance risk management guidance to the CV Business Unit leadership to help ensure strategies and activities are consistent with business policies.
  • Partners with the business in proactively identifying, assessing and managing Compliance risks including those associated with new commercial strategies and ensure effective business implementation of risk mitigation plans.
  • Adopts a sensible, practical and risk-based approach in embedding effective compliance controls in business activities and processes.
  • Develops and implements a Compliance risk-based monitoring plan for commercial activities in collaboration with Global Compliance Assurance, identify trends and work with business stakeholders to implement corrective actions.
  • Ensures that reports of suspected policy violations are addressed within the appropriate procedures of the Compliance Program.
  • Proactively provides inputs to corporate compliance programs and ensure effective timely execution.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  MBA or other advanced degree or professional certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as a senior professional - compliance, law, accountancy or senior commercial leader.
  • Significant experience in pharmaceuticals or a related industry.
  • Knowledge and experience of corporate governance, health care regulations, laws and standards.
  • Team management skills and experience.
  • Project Management experience and skills.
  • Proven track-record in initiating, driving and implementing changes.
  • Prior experience in compliance, legal or regulatory functions at large pharmaceutical company preferred.
  • Enterprise mindset.
  • Strong business acumen, sound and confident judgement, courage and unquestionable integrity.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to deliver and ensure execution of Compliance strategy.
  • Possesses a good blend of strategic and operational experience and the ability see "the big picture" and also dive into details.
  • Strong drive and results oriented individual with ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative manner.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and quick to exercise sound professional judgement, clear decision making and knowing when to escalate to senior management for support, guidance, information.
  • Courage and conviction to manage difficult issues and ability to influence senior leaders, peers and others to work towards the best commercial solutions within acceptable and agreed risk parameters.
  • Highly agile and constantly provokes thought, challenges the status quo and takes on initiative and responsibility for simplifying existing methodologies, defining new ones and providing creative and entrepreneurial business solutions.
  • Able to present ideas articulately and can effectively influence, get buy-in and drive consensus at all levels.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communications skills.
