Senior Director, Scientific Communications

Our client is a major global healthcare company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Senior Director, Scientific Communications.

The Senior Director, Scientific Communications is accountable for all aspects of scientific communications for assigned oncology product(s) and/or related disease states(s) and/or franchises including oversight of: 1) global publication strategy, planning and execution and 2) global medical education strategy, planning and execution to ensure awareness of key data and key messages for the company’s products to internal and external stakeholders.  The incumbent may directly oversee scientific communications for products directly depending on complexity of team.  This person will initiate and sponsor functional excellence enhancement projects to drive long term medical education and publications excellence across the entire team/organization.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Manages team of Scientific Communication Associates for multiple products / disease states and franchises including recruiting and hiring; onboarding and training; mentoring, coaching, performance management; and reviewing and approving travel and expenses.
  • Accountable for all aspects of scientific communication strategies for assigned oncology products directly and/or indirectly.
  • Leads a cross-functional publication team and develops publication plans.
  • Leads development of a comprehensive communication strategy/plan in alignment with GMA, GPT and/or Cx team (medical/commercial/regional).
  • Establishes strong working relationships and actively collaborates with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensures alignment of global medical education needs with regional /country needs.
  • Manages all aspects of publication and medical education agencies in support of scientific communications.  Identifies and screens appropriate vendors, solicits, evaluates and approves proposals.
  • Ensures compliance with all legal regulatory and company requirements for scientific communications.
  • Manages all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects, including vendor negotiations.  Develops yearly budget for assigned product(s) and manages monthly spend within allocated budget.
  • Accountable for providing functional guidance as well as strategic direction ensuring business needs are met across team of Scientific Communication Associates ensuring alignment across teams, line functions and organization and that business needs are met.
  • Determines strategy and provides direction across Department, organization and external stakeholders.
  • Initiates and sponsors functional excellence enhancement projects to drive long term medical education and publications excellence across entire department / organization.
  • Leverages established relationships with medical experts.
  • Reviews and approves all financial and contractual aspects of assigned budgets, including managing monthly spend within budget, overseeing the development of yearly budget for entire team across multiple products / diseases / franchise.  May manage whole department budget.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Advanced scientific degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience (with 5+ years in Pharma/Biotech Industry) in publication planning and/or medical education activities with a proficient level of understanding of pharmaceutical business, including drug development process, and legal/compliance global environment.
  • 5+ years of oncology related experience highly preferred.
  • Proven experience leading teams and managing managers with a minimum of 2 years of experience managing direct reports.
  • Experience in driving the development of communication strategies and key scientific message platforms.  Ability to provide strategic insight into scientific expert development activities, publication planning and developing medical education materials and programs that support product launches in oncology.
  • Broad experience in planning and executing live educational events and enduring materials and/or experience in driving the development of scientific messaging and execution of publications.
  • Must be an expert in project management and budget management.
