Our client is a major global healthcare company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a VP, Business Development.

The VP, Business Development leads the Search and Evaluation (S&E) effort of the Oncology Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) team.  This position develops a robust process to identify promising clinical oncology assets and to monitor the progress of such assets to enable timely engagement.  The incumbent will manage the S&E team and develop people.  This person will lead the collaboration with the Strategic Alliance team on pre-PoC deals.  Serving as the lead for BD&L projects, the incumbent will drive projects from evaluation, due diligence, through internal approval, external negotiations to deal consummation.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Leads Search and Evaluation effort for OBU BD&L.
  • Develops and executes process to identify promising external clinical assets to support OBU strategy, include organizing BD&L ad boards.
  • Develops and executes process to monitor high interest clinical assets and to build productive relationship with senior management of potential partners.
  • Builds and maintains close relationship with the venture capital community, including MPM.
  • Partners with internal organization to build relationships with key academic institutions.
  • Leads the BD&L participation in disease area strategy.
  • Develops and executes process to track S&E effort.
  • Leads the coordination of BD&L effort at key business and scientific/medical meetings.
  • Leads BD&L projects from evaluation, due diligence, deal approval process, to negotiation, deal closing and transition to alliance management.
  • Manages and develops the S&E team.
  • Coordinates conference coverage throughout the year with efficient meeting coverage at conferences.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • MD or PhD in biomedical sciences.  MBA is a plus, with experience in S&E in oncology and experience negotiating deals in life sciences.
  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in business development or related functions.
  • Strong scientific/medical knowledge in oncology.
  • Familiarity with drug development in oncology.
  • Ability to lead BD&L projects (S&E, negotiations, alliance management).
  • Must be a strategic thinker.
  • Ability to multitask and juggle large number of responsibilities and priorities.
  • Must be action driven.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, particularly with the ability to deliver high quality and impactful memos and presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfort with designing and implementing efficient processes to improve productivity.
  • Strong people skills, particularly the ability to work with senior management and people from all parts of the company and world.
  • Experience in leading and closing deals.
