Senior Director, Oncology Medical Affairs

Our client is a major global healthcare company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Senior Director, Oncology Medical Affairs.

Global Medical Affairs (GMA) is part of the Global Medicines Development (GMD) Organization.  This role reports to the GMA TAVP, who reports to the VP GMA, who reports to EVP GMD, who reports to the CEO. The incumbent will work closely with the Medical Affairs Leader (MAL) in the leadership of the medical strategy and plan for the brands and TA.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Provides scientific direction for the development of our client’s assets.
  • Leverages relationships with external customers to ensure robust physician and patients insights are what drive successful product launches.
  • Leads the development and delivery of the Brand Medical Plan(s) aligned to the therapeutic area (TA) Medical Strategy.
  • Ensures that market insights are used to inform all product development and franchise strategy deliverables.
  • Interfaces primarily externally with expert opinion leaders and the scientific community to lead delivery of a medical advocacy plan that drives successful launch of innovative and differentiated new medicines, by ensuring the medical community is appropriately engaged to provide patient and physician insights that allow them to make the best treatment decisions.
  • Accountable for delivery of a medical advocacy plan that drives successful launch of innovative and differentiated new medicines within the TA.
  • Accountable for shaping the Target Product Profile (TPP) on the basis of Medical Insights, provided by commercial and regional medical teams, on patient/prescriber needs and competitor Medical position to enable the Global Product Team to shape Phase IIb and Phase III clinical trial design.
  • Accountable for promoting deeper understanding of Medical aspects of Global TA, Product and Brand strategies to ensure understanding across the organization and the strategic direction being take.
  • Accountable for engaging and cultivating relationships with leading global opinion leaders to gain: contribution/ participation in advisory boards, greater understanding of the therapeutic area and insights into unmet patient needs.
  • Accountable for representing the company at a variety of scientific and medical forums, to include, as appropriate: medical education forums, scientific roundtables, congresses, and symposia.
  • Responsible for the coordination of Medical Affairs activities including Science Advisory boards.
  • Ensures the alignment of the publication and medical evidence plans to the Medical Strategy and Medical plan.
  • Provides appropriate input into the Global ESRO (external scientific research operations) team to support academic partnerships and scientific collaborations.
  • Responsible for working with the Medical Academy Director to deliver the content for a curriculum, based on the Medical Plan, designed for internal medical content and capabilities training across the company.
  • Responsible for leading the initial development and ensuring the accuracy of medical promotional materials and communications prior to submission to GMQA (Global Medical Quality Assurance) for the final approval.
  • Responsible for the creation, delivery and management of an annual Brand Medical Budget that is aligned with GMD or GPPS budget processes (depending on the life-cycle of the product/brand).
  • Enhances the reputation of the company in all meetings with external stakeholders, as evidenced by positive feedback from international opinion leaders.
  • Supports the successful development and medical marketing of company brands that deliver patient-centric medical value.
  • Delivery of fit-for-purpose Medical Strategies and plans that include Medical Evidence Plans, which are delivered by the Medical Evidence Directors.
  • Adds value internally, evidenced by positive feedback from TAVP, GMA LT, members of the MWG, GBTs, GPTs and all other stakeholders.
  • Creates content and delivers insight for a curriculum that drives internal Medical content and capabilities training across the company that improves the performance of recipients.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • MD required, with relevant advanced scientific or medical certification.
  • Practical/working knowledge of the Brand and Disease Area - Oncology - (Lung or Solid Tumor experience preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with developing medical strategies and plans.
  • Demonstrated experience with global opinion leader engagement.
  • Patient-centered but commercially aware, values-driven approach.
  • Strong project management skills and extensive experience of managing priority brands.
  • Proven ability to engage, influence and build effective relationships with opinion leaders, across functional and geographic boundaries.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Broad understanding of more than one part of the business i.e. Discovery, Clinical, Regulatory, Medical or Commercial roles.
  • Presentation and influencing/negotiation skills are essential.
  • High ethical standards required.
