Director Marketing Direct-to-Patient

Our client is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Director Marketing Direct-to-Patient.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Leads six member team responsible for generating strategic and tactical operations of the direct-to-patient and community marketing efforts; inclusive of branded, unbranded, personal and non-personal initiatives across multiple channels and for eleven brands at varied life cycle stages.
  • Accountable for cross-functional internal and external leadership of large community initiatives designed to further both corporate and brand objectives; liaising closely with Public Affairs, Government Affairs, Medical Affairs, Sales leadership and Executive management.
  • Responsible for developing POA for twenty-person, field-based Community Liaison (CL) team.
  • CL focus includes branded and unbranded tools as well as strategic programming developed to engage undiagnosed individuals to seek care and to retain diagnosed patients in care.
  • Develops patient-friendly branded and unbranded education as well as other direct-to-patient initiatives based on customer needs and incorporating health literacy and adult learning principles.
  • Identifies, selects, manages and evaluates external agencies, consultants and vendors to develop marketing programs in support of achieving the company’s strategic objectives.
  • Coordinates the development of patient tactics according to strategy and within agreed upon budgets. Inclusive of:  Treatment starter kits, advertising, brochures, direct mail, digital, medical office educational literature, videos and CRM management.
  • Works with Public Affairs to identify synergies and maintain a positive corporate image.
  • Responsible for “Community Task Force” project team leadership.
  • Effectively manages multiple agency partners to produce deliverables within timelines and on budget.
  • Gains approval for marketing materials through internal review process and adheres to SOPs.
  • Sets priorities in circumstances of continued complex and conflicting requirements.
  • Utilizes high level of business acumen in analyzing and coordinating activities from identified industry trends, competitor’s resources and practices.
  • Sets a positive example for others to follow, shares own expert knowledge, models standards of performance, offers guidance and develops junior Commercial team members.
  • Ensures that all marketing activities are in compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Leads or serves as a key project team member on cross-functional projects, often with high visibility to senior management within the organization or with international impact.
  • Has demonstrated hiring and development skills, with the ability to motivate and engage teams.
  • Provides a long-term view to senior Marketing management based on personal knowledge of the competitive environment and patient/community sub-markets.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience, with a minimum of 5 years in product marketing or advertising focused on consumers/patients is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing or related fields required.  MBA or other advanced business degree is desired.
  • Familiarity with marketing fundamentals, strategy, sales and commercial policies and practices.
  • Previous experience in marketing research, pharmaceutical sales/sales leadership and/or product/portfolio life cycle management is ideal.
  • Therapeutic Area knowledge preferred.
  • Proven expertise as a leader with well-developed cross-functional influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to lead, interact with, focus, resolve conflict and drive consensus among individuals from a variety of cultures, and disciplines.
  • Must have a strong presence with ability to command respect through exercise of sound business judgment and clear decision-making.
  • Excellent communications skills with an ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Proven project management skills, performance management, planning, prioritization, objective setting, meeting management and plan execution.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain, develop, and utilize a level of product and therapeutic disease knowledge to promote the appropriate use of the company’s products to Key Opinion Leaders and treatment community leaders.
  • Must have a track record of successful pharma/biotech patient/community marketing with an understanding of expense budget planning and tracking.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams or work groups.
  • Demonstrated understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory requirements and impact on development of marketing materials is required.
  • Recognized expertise in implementing a pharmaceutical communication plan targeting patients, healthcare providers, and advocacy/community organizations.
  • Demonstrated development of external relationships among multicultural populations.
  • Must be fluent in conversational and written English.
