Executive Director, Chemistry

Our client is a major global healthcare company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for an Executive Director, Chemistry.

As Head of the Oncology iMed Chemistry team the individual will be responsible for leading all local medicinal chemistry efforts, working with affiliated line functions to ensure appropriate screening strategies, HTS, hit-lead, lead optimization and candidate selection.  This is a leadership and scientific role which includes involvement from target selection, candidate drug selection through to Proof of Concept in clinical testing. The incumbent will sit on the global Oncology iScience Leadership team and contribute to strategy and portfolio delivery.  He/she will ensure recruitment, training, development and deployment of resources to optimize project delivery and will work with colleagues to continuously improve the effectiveness of the capabilities.  This person will work collaboratively with colleagues in the Bioscience, Pharmacology and DMPK departments to ensure scientific and timely delivery of the medchem contribution to project teams.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Accountable to provide scientific leadership and manage resources effectively, providing flexible, competent and responsive services in good quality and speed according to business needs; continuously enhance productivity and cost effectiveness.
  • Drives a team of scientists delivering the chemistry contribution to allocated projects in the iMed, working collaboratively with global chemistry colleagues and specifically the counterpart Head in the UK.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing to optimize delivery across an assigned portfolio of projects.
  • Selects, develops, coaches, mentors, retains, motivates and inspires scientists.
  • Creates and maintains a work environment in which scientific challenge and innovation are maximized.
  • Ensures that the work of the department is performed with high quality in accordance with compliance processes.
  • Ensures that the members of the department have the right knowledge/education for the activities.
  • Establishes appropriate and measurable objectives for performance and provides on-going performance feedback to staff.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with line management of skilled professional staff.
  • Significant experience in medicinal chemistry with a track record of delivering in discovery as well as translation into the development setting, ideally including regulatory submission.
  • Experience in oncology drug discovery and development preferred.
  • Experience across a broad range of target classes preferred.
  • Wide experience of the drug discovery and development process and a working knowledge of international regulatory principles and guidelines preferred.
  • Extensive experience in operating across international boundaries, as well as cross-functionally preferred.
  • Broad background and comprehensive understanding of discovery and development.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with emphasis of people management and development of others.
  • Strong managerial experience.
  • Oral and written communication advocacy skills.
  • Has passion for customers, thinks strategically, acts decisively, drives performance, works collaboratively, and develops people and organization.
