Group Leader, Discovery

Our client is a rapidly growing, specialty biopharmaceutical company.  They have retained us to assist them in their search for a Group Leader, Discovery.

The Group Leader, Discovery will report to the Head of Discovery and be an integral part of the biology and drug discovery team.  This position offers opportunities to be involved in all phases of drug discovery spanning target identification and validation through preclinical development that enables IND filing.  The incumbent will be responsible for leading a team of scientists in a matrix environment to drive forward, and support, therapeutic programs.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Leads a team of PhD/non-PhD scientists for target identification and validation.
  • Acts as the scientific driver of therapeutic programs and platform biology.
  • Establishes cell-based assays for selecting and optimizing lead oligonucleotides that are suitable for in vivo studies.
  • Contributes to building a strong teamwork culture and highly efficient matrix organization.
  • Mentors and provides career development guidance to junior scientists.
  • Manages and provides directions for external collaborations including CROs and academic collaborators.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • PhD in biological sciences with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Neurobiology, Ophthalmology or Liver Diseases.
  • 7+ years of biotechnology/pharmaceutical research experience.
  • Successful leadership track record.
  • Demonstrated success of leading drug discovery programs to preclinical development.
  • Recognized scientific contribution in areas of expertise.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and proven capability to focus on activities that enable decision making.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills to manage multiple projects in a matrix research organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Hands-on experience establishing primary cell culture is preferred.
  • Experience with nucleic acid drug discovery desired.
